e-Based Security, LLC was founded by Thomas J. Raef with the vision of developing a simplified network security solution that would meet the unique requirements of the small business market.

While servicing the needs of small business owners through his computer consulting work, Mr. Raef realized that there were no real solutions designed specifically with the small business owner in mind. After conducting extensive research, he discovered that over 80% of small business owners want to receive recommendations on what system security measures they should invest in.

His research also revealed that over 70% of small business owners want to have someone other than themselves handle security issues, even if they feel "comfortable" handling non-security related PC issues.

Other important findings of his research include:

• Most small businesses are more dependent on their computer systems than the larger "enterprise" sized companies yet, rarely have dedicated "system security budgets".
• If a server experiences a failure at a large company, they have fail-over systems standing by. If the server at a small business fails, it quite possibly means the company is shut down until it is fixed.
• Large companies have IT staff dedicated to monitoring firewall logs, intrusion detection systems, staying current with recent vulnerabilities and in general being responsible for overall system security. Small business owners have neither the budget or the financial justification for full-time security staff.
• Over 80% of small business owners wrongly believe that a firewall and anti-virus software are all they need for system security.
• Many small business owners lack company-wide policies that list what is considered acceptable use of company system resources. This leads to an "open" policy where nothing is really prohibited and allows employees to install whatever software they desire.
• Over 75% of small businesses visited, showed definite signs of successful security breach. These signs were easily detected by a trained security professional yet were totally unnoticed by the small business owner or staff.
• Rarely (less than 8%) did small business owners recognize one brand of security solutions over another.
• Small business owners were only interested in results. They want to see reports of what has been blocked, who's trying to get in and the online activity of employees. Only a small percentage (less than 5%) were interested in the methods used to provide protection.

This research led him to develop "The Box". This device combined with the associated service, offer a complete solution for small business owners. By marketing this through a reseller in the small business owner's area, the owner gets the recommendations they require along with the handling requirements they seek.
